Thank you for your support of your son or daughter during these final weeks.
The Dowdales School Nutritional Action Group (SNAG) celebrated National Healthy Eating Week in school last week, designing and running a number of activities and competitions delivered during students’ Preparation for Learning sessions. Activities included designing a healthy pizza; with the winning design to be made in the school canteen, healthy eating quizzes and analysis of food diaries. Students also took part in the ‘Healthiest Form’ competition where points were awarded to different healthy snack options bought through the schools cashless catering system. This initiative encouraged students to choose healthy snack options in the dining hall and I look forward to seeing the results.
On Thursday students took part in a live discussion with Anthony Horowitz, the writer of the Alex Rider series. Students were highly amused by his detailed description of his school days and the teachers who he apparently writes into most of his novels and then kills off in a variety of grizzly ways. The group were also able to ask questions via Facebook for him to answer and in response he told us that he prefers to write for children. The students enjoyed the experience and are eagerly anticipating the release of the eleventh Alex Rider book.
Students from Year 8, 9 and 10 went to Copeland Stadium in Whitehaven to take part in the Cumbria Schools Athletics Competition. The group competed in a number of events including 100m, 300m, Hurdles, Long Jump, Discus, Shot Putt and Triple Jump. Year 10 student Mille Chadwick was named County Champion in the intermediate girls hurdles and was awarded second place in the Long jump and will now represent Cumbria in the regional championships being held on Saturday 17th June in Hexham. Well done to all students who took part in the Competition.
On Tuesday a group of Year 9 and 10 students went to Furness College to take part in the BAE Championship Challenge event. Students worked in small teams to complete a range of STEM based activities showing their ability to be creative and resourceful in an engineering environment whilst also working alongside BAE ambassadors.
Former Dowdales student Lauren Milby, who left in 2009, came to school last week to meet with a group of Year 8 students to share her experience of qualifying and working as a Veterinary Nurse. Lauren highlighted the importance of making the right choices, working hard and researching potential careers as well as studying hard in English, Maths and Science as they are three of the most important subjects. The Year 8 students were extremely receptive to Lauren’s advice and asked questions about Lauren’s option choices and future career plans.
