Year 10 Boys Football Finals : Cumbria Cup : Dowdales –v- Trinity School Carlisle.   Report by Eliot M.

Previous Rounds:

St Bernards

Parkview

Whitehaven 6-4

Netherall 1-0

At the end of last term the Year 10 football team travelled to Penrith to compete in the final of the Cumbria Cup for the first time in over 10 years.  The opposing team were trinity School from Carlisle .  We didn’t get off to a  very good start with the school mini bus missing the turn off for the pitch.  As we got changed the heavens opened but the rain and hail didn’t dampen our spirits.  We got off to a strong start, playing good passing football and creating chances.  It  became clear very early on that it was going to be a rough game when one pf the trinity players was put in the book for deliberately stamping on Declan B.

The real chance of the game went to Trinity after a misunderstanding between our goalie and the defence, but to their dismay they put the ball wide.  From then on the defence rose to the occasion and our goalie had little to do as our midfield and defence dealt with every tackle and loose ball.  As the game was played some good runs from Sam B gave us some promising chances but it was obvious that only one goal would decide the tie and we went into half time 0-0.

After a rousing team talk by Mr Barton we went into the second half attacking for the elusive goal.  Dowdales created the most chances and their hard work was soon rewarded after some good link up play between Matthew B and Tony B lead to the referee awarding us a penalty for handball. Tony confidently put the ball in the back of the net.  Now we had to protect our lead in the final minutes and show our supporters that we were the winners!  Trinity upped their game and, if it had not been a goal line clearance from Liam C in the dying minutes, would have equalised to take the game to extra time.  But Dowdales stuck to their task and were crowned worthy winners after what seemed like an age of added time.

Well done to all the team who showed great competitiveness and sportsmanship throughout.

The Team:   Phillip P, Ross C, Adam J, Eliot M, Liam C, Declan B, Sam D, James C, Marc G, Tony B, Sam B.

Substitutes:  Matthew B,  Lewis W, Jamie T, Scott S, Lewis G.

DOWDALES SCHOOL - vs - NELSON-TOMLINSON SCHOOL  :  Year 10 Girls Football  : March 12th.   Report by Amy P.

The long journey to Wigton left the Dowdales Year 10 girls  tired and nobody seemed to be up for the semi-final challenge.   This was demonstrated in their first half performance.  Both lack of enthusiasm and poor defending led to a first goal being conceded not long into the first half.  In fact, this continued throughout the first half and Dowdales girls were lucky to be only 2-0 down at half time.

Nelson-Tomlinson, however, played incredibly well, undoubtedly the best side the Year 10's have faced.  However, Dowdales girls did show a glimmer of what they were capable of through Elizabeth O. and Catherine T.'s link up play which was extremely unlucky not to have ended with a goal.  For Dowdales, half time couldn't have come sooner.

You wouldn't have thought Dowdales girls were the same team in the second half.  The home team were made to look ordinary.  Dowdales managed to have the majority of possessions, partly due to the outstanding defence and pressure midfield.  Jodie J. and Catherine T. battled well but yet again were unlucky not to have scored.  The main chance, however, fell to Amy P. after a free kick was awarded from a bad tackle on Toni M. who also gave a commanding performance and battled hard in midfield.  The free kick was taken from 35 yds out and was set right on target.  However, Nelson's keeper did not fault and kept the ball from the back of the net.  Later on in the second half, Dowdales were caught on the break and a third goal was conceded.

The score line did not do the girls second half performance justice nor the stand-in keeper, Jessica Y. who demonstrated her keeping talents on many occasions.

Nelson-Tomlinson eventually won the game 3-0.

YEAR 11 BOYS : Football Town Cup Final:  Dowdales - v -  St Bernards

On a sunny spring afternoon Dowdales Year 11 Boys Football team took the football field in the Town cup final against a talented St Bernards team, at Parkview.

Both teams started off playing attacking football with most of Dowdales attacks coming  through the hard work of Jordan R and winger Chris R, while at the other end St Bernard’s were nearly rewarded for their good play when they hit the crossbar from a corner.

As the first half came to a close St Bernard’s took the lead.  After their attacker broke through the Dowdales defence he was then brought down by Scott S which the referee deemed to be a penalty.  The kick was converted to make the score 1-0, at which it stayed until half time.

After some words of wisdom from Mr France , Dowdales dominated  the second half but couldn’t turn this domination into a goal.  A solid defence and solid goalkeeping kept the St Bernard’s attack from scoring again.

In the final minutes Daniel R unleashed a screaming shot goal-bound towards the St Bernard’s only to have it blocked by a defender.

Dowdales hard working performance wasn’t enough as, at the final whistle, St Bernard’s had won 1-0.  This was a great performance by every Dowdales player.

Year 11 Boys Basketball  Town Cup Final – Dowdales – v -  Barrow Arrows

After finishing runners-up in the league competition, Dowdales boys were out to prove a point in what came to be a very one sided game.  Dowdales dominated from the start, led by the excellent defending of Josh H, with the towering presence of Paul K and Richard B helping to shut out many attacks.

The final score of 52-24 did justice to what was, in the end, an excellent last game together, leaving Mike H to lift the cup for Dowdales.

Year 11 Girls B asketball Town Cup Final – Dowdales – v – Chetwynde

After a close game it was Dowdales girls who edged what was always expected to be a thriller.  Led by the strong rebounding of Frances B and tenacious defending of Emily T, Dowdales edged the game 42-39 after overtime to become town champions.

Year 7 Boys Football Town Cup Final – Dowdales –V- St Bernards

After an impressive run which saw the boys reach the final, their goal scoring form went missing on the big occasion.  During a game which saw equal possession and good scoring opportunity, it was sadly the opposition who took theirs to make an equal game look rather one sided. The final score of 4-0 did not do the boys justice on the night nor did it reflect their play throughout the season.
