Why study Classical Civilisation?
This subject will give you the opportunity to study the archaeology, art, literature, politics, social history, religion and philosophy of the Classical Greek and Roman worlds. Particular areas of study will include Home and Family Life in Athens, Pompeii, Greek Drama, Homer's Odyssey and Roman Britain. As well as being fascinating and inspiring, this course will help you develop analytical skills and intellectual flexibility which will be useful in a wide range of jobs or in further study.
You will study:
Two civilisation and two literature topics. You will study both Greek and Roman topics within this course.
You will learn:
How these great civilisations have impacted on our modern world;
How to appreciate different cultures;
How to read and appreciate literature in translation;
How to communicate clearly and effectively.
Assessment:
There are two levels of entry for this examination:
At the Higher level the grades available are D-A*.
At Foundation level the grades available are G-C.
Controlled Assessment (replacing Coursework):
There is one controlled assessment completed in a classroom environment and encompasses a 2000 word essay. There is no coursework to be completed at home but there will be structured research in order to complete the controlled assessment to a high standard.
Exams:
There will be 3 x 1 hour exams based upon the topics mentioned above. Each exam is worth 25% of the final mark combined with 25% for the controlled assessment.
