November.
The careers convention is in early November. All 3 post 16
options are explored includng apprenticeships, further education
colleges [Kendal, Lancaster and Morecambe and Furness Colleges]
and the Sixth Form.
December.
All young people in year 11 who are considering apprenticeships
must have a careers interview by Christmas.
January.
The start of the apprenticeship recruitment process. Large
companies start to contact Connexions with recruitment plans. [eg
BNFL. Bae systems, BT, Kimberly Clark, United Utilities.]
Through spring term start to
write to smaller companies [ building firms, hairdressers,
engineering companies, garages etc. ] Contact Mike Ridyard for
lists of firms to contact.
February.
Apply for further education colleges. Application forms are in
school. Apply to all 3 if you want but be sure to attend open
days.
March.
Barrow Sixth Form College link tutor interviews in school. Talk
through A level , AVCE or GCSE retake courses.
April .
Keep looking out for any suitable apprenticeships on the upper
school noticeboard.
Make sure you have a college
course fall back plan.
May.
If you are going to college obtain an
application pack from school for the Education Maintenance
Allowance [EMA].
