Dowdales offers pupils excellent opportunities in sport including the chance to take GCSE in P.E.
Aims of the Physical Education Department
To contribute to the overall education of young people by helping them to lead full and valuable lives through engaging in purposeful sporting activities. The Physical Education Department will deliver a broad and balanced learning experience containing:
- A balance of areas of sporting activity compulsory games activities in all years.
- A differentiated programme considering those with disabilities and special talents.
- Activities which provide equality of access and opportunity to those of different race, gender and culture.
Physical Education Department objectives
- To actively support and positively contribute to the school's overall philosophy.
- To educate pupils with regard to Health, Hygiene and Fitness.
- To promote the development of movement, co-ordination and the acquisition of a range of motor skills.
- To encourage responsible attitudes towards safety.
- To increase students' awareness of their own capabilities and an appreciation of individual differences.
- To enable pupils to appreciate skill and competence in physical movement as a participant, involved observer and informed spectator.
- To allow for pupils to work co-operatively develop inter-personal skill.
- To enable pupils to gain pleasure and enjoyment from all aspects of physical education.

During the course of their P.E. programme all pupils experience a wide range of activities.

There are also opportunities in Year 11 to experience squash, weight-training, golf, ski-ing and a martial art.
In addition, there is a lively, out of lessons, programme aimed at all pupils, involving coaching clubs, inter-form competitions and school teams. There are a number of professional and external coaches who are involved in this thriving programme which gives children an opportunity to improve and continue their sport often resulting in awards, certificates or exams. A rugby school will be based at Dowdales.
