English Curriculum
In the English department at Dowdales we believe in challenging every child to achieve their best. We are committed to motivate and engage pupils so that their learning experience within English is enjoyable and worthwhile. We see each pupil as an individual and are highly aware of where they are in their learning and the target they are proceeding towards. To ensure this we teach two high ability groups and mixed ability groups per year. To meet the needs of all pupils we differentiate mixed ability lessons at three levels. The needs of pupils with special educational needs are met by the use of differentiation and support: including the use of guided sessions within lessons. The English department has very close links with the SENCO and the special needs department. Gifted and Talented pupils’ education is enriched by the use of an IEP which gives focus, support and differentiation. Sessions for the ‘Gifted and Talented’ also take place as extra – curricular activities: in the form of ‘Carpe Biblio’ and ‘The Writer’s Guild’.
The English Framework for KS3 is closely followed to ensure progression and each child’s development. At KS4 we follow the WJEC course for English and English Literature. A high standard of behaviour is insisted upon at all times in lessons and pupils are expected to take responsibility for their own learning. Homework for each unit is given out at the start of the unit and is placed into exercise books. Pupils write dates of homework on this sheet and in their diary. Assessment for learning is a key part of our teaching and pupils’ books are marked weekly/fortnightly using formative assessment. Pupils also complete summative assessments in the form of ‘autumn’ and ‘summer’ exams. This again measures progression and development. Schemes of work are in place for each year group and these include long- term, medium-term and short-term plans. However, the department works in such a way that as we respond to pupils' needs and assessment these short-term lesson plans will change and this is reflected in our planning. |
